Penny The Lhasa Apso Puppy

What a joy I had last week! I had the pleasure to snuggling with Penny the Lhasa Apso puppy. Penny came on Saturday morning along with her toys, treat and blanket. She settled in immediately for her new adventure. This 5 month was full of love. She stole my heart and all my neighbors, too. She was the hit of the neighborhood!

When Penny wasn't licking my face she amused herself with her toys which sometimes included chasing her tail! She behaved like such a little lady and always knew what a walk outside on her leash meant. Talk about well trained, this young lady truly was.

While every pet I meet is special in their own way, Penny, definitely made her mark in my heart. I know Kelly and her daughters, Jordan and Lauren, are very lucky to have this sweetie in their lives! Come back, soon Penny! We all miss you!

8-28-07 is Katrina Pet Remembrance Day

I just got my online newsletter, Etails, from the North Shore America League. One of the articles is about disaster preparedness for our animal companions . It is a good reminder to have some plans in place for our pets as well as our families. I am taking the liberty of including the article here.

8-28-07 is Katrina Pet Remembrance Day.Disaster Readiness Tips for Pet Owners

If you’re an animal owner, it’s likely you consider your pets as members of your family and want to protect them from harm. Disasters come in all shapes and sizes - including natural disasters. So when setting a plan for coping with the effects of potential severe weather - especially during the current hurricane season - it's important to remember your beloved pets' needs.Get Disaster Readiness Guidelines

Are You Prepared? Disaster Readiness Tips for Pet OwnersAs a conscientious animal owner you probably consider your pets as members of the family. So, when setting a plan for coping with the effects of disasters of any kind, remember to provide for your beloved pets’ health and safety needs.
Here are some guidelines:
Food and Water: Food and water: Stock up on dry or canned food, being sure to include a mechanical can opener. When putting down a water supply, remember to have plenty available or your pet as well as a drinking bowl. A good rule is to pack a 5-7 day supply.Medications: Be certain to have a sufficient supply on hand. Keep a photocopy of essential or life-supporting pet prescriptions in your emergency kit.Identification: Microchipping your dog or cat will increase your chances of reuniting in case of separation during an emergency. By embedding a microchip with your contact information under your pet's skin, a veterinarian or animal facility, with a simple scan, will be able to identify an animal’s owners. In some evacuation cases, a pet may have to go to a separate shelter or veterinary kennel since human shelters frequently prohibit animals for health and space reasons. If you reside in an area where evacuations are likely, be informed about pet shelter options before disaster strikes. In addition to microchipping, if you and your animals must be separated, be certain you also have your pets securely tagged and keep photocopies of the tags (and rabies tags as well) in your emergency kit. Also, have recent photos of your pets to make identifications easy and swift. Transporting: If you must evacuate, make every effort to bring your pet. To ensure safe evacuation for a pet who may be stressed or agitated by the situation, use tagged leashes, collars and/or harnesses and keep the animal close by family members for both comfort and security. Smaller pets, especially felines, are best transported in well-ventilated wire crates or carriers.Sanitation, First Aid: Pads, paper towels, rags, a litter supply, and pet-safe disinfectant will come in handy. Add some over-sized bandages and gauze strips to your family first aid kit if you have a larger animal. Comfort Zone: A favorite blanket or chew toy can be just the thing to provide a sense of security for an animal under stress. In such times, take a moment to reassure your best friend that you are there, protecting him or her.

Barnaby The Cat

Today I got to meet my newest feline friend, Barnaby. His Mom, Katie, said he is one lazy, fat cat. Well, I would prefer to say he is a sweet, pleasingly plump fellow! We got to hang out some today and I brought him my favorite kitty treat. Katie says he hates everything but I found the secret weapon - - - Liv A Littles freeze dired chicken! I haven't found a cat yet that does not think these treats aren't the cat's meow! Barnaby was no exception! He scarfed these up like candy!

Granted, this special treat does not come cheap! But it is a good high quality food for you cat. What better than pure protein from poultry? No wheat, fillers or grain, just plain old meat! It is no wonder cats don't want the average treat! When in the world did you see a cat lunging for a stalk of wheat in the field? Kitty wants to eat the mouse (meat protein) not some dry old wheat plant (i.e. average dry cat food/treat). Treat? Wheat is a treat!?! NOT!!! Barnaby was no exception. He went right for the good stuff!

Where do you find Liv A Littles? I buy mine at Whole Foods. You will also find it at Wild Oats in Evanston and many other natural food stores. Average cost is $8.99 and you need to refrigerate it after it is opened. My kitties stare at the fridge door any time I open it since they now know this is where the good stuff is kept! Give it a try, you and kitty will be glad you did! And if your kitty really does not like them, give me a call! My cats will happily take any leftovers!!!

Cats 'N Dogs!

Who says says cats and dogs don't get along? Well, at first, Gracie, the resident cat, wasn't too happy to find that Trigger invaded her territoty. But as you can see, things have changed and now Gracie and Trigger have become playmates. Trigger still needs to learn that biting Gracie's ears might not be in her best interests but so far so good!

Baby Jug

This week began with a new puppy to look after. Trigger, is a female Jug. Jug? Well, I learned this week that a Jug is a cross between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pug. And what a cutie, she is! Trigger's Mom, Nicole, travelled to Ohio to get her from a rescue. So not only is she the first jug on the block but she is also imported! How cool is that!

Trigger is just 9 weeks old and doing so well at her crate training lessons. She gets an "A" for learning to go potty as soon as she hits the grass. She is quite feisty with some needle sharp teeth that think the world is hers to bite. Yet, she is so endearing that she even has gotten Gracie, the cat of the household, to quit hissing and start a playgroup! They are quite the pair trolloping through the house!

Nicole, in case you are tuning in, I just want you to know that this is Trigger's Web debut. Your Mom and I are taking good care of her. Enjoy your trip but c'mon home cause Trigger misses you bunches! Oh, yes, in case you are wondering, that is a twig that she is chewing on. It is a much better option that my toes, Gracie's tail, your Mom's fingers . . . LOL! Yes, she is chewing EVERYTHING this little jug of yours!

Da Bird in Action

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4wIBTLuR2M&mode=related&search=

Just one of many Da Bird on You Tube . .

Da Bird

If there is one toy that EVERY cat guardian should have in their kitty toy box, it is Da Bird! This wonderful feather on a fishing pole is so enticing that I have not met a cat yet who isn't in love with it. From what I understand this aerodynamic fishing pole was and maybe still is handmade by a gal in Michigan. It is superior to anything else you see on the market in terms of how it is made and the materials used. It truly mimics a bird and it will totally captivate your cat. And after your cat has 'captured' it enough times that the bird begins to shrink into oblivion, you can buy replacement feathers rather than the entire pole. That being said, this is true unless you have a cat like my Sadie, who also loved to chew on the nylon string!

I bought Da Bird at a local pet shop in Lincolnwood, called the Animal Store. I have since found it at the Pet Supplies Plus stores. And if leaving the house isn't on your agenda you can find it on the web as well. Da Bird cost about $6.00 +/- at Pet Supplies Plus. The Animal Store on Touhy in Lincolnwood charges more. Both are cheaper than paying for shipping from Amazon, etc.

I just had the pleasure of cat sitting this pretty kitty, Kishmish this week. Above are a few photos I took today on our visit as she met Da Bird for the first time.

Get one for your feline friend. I can assure you that your kitty will be thrilled and so will you!

Quotation of the Week

I got this email with a quote of the week. Somehow I think you will agree this is worth pondering!

"Never try to teach a cat to sing. It wastes your time, and it annoys the cat."
-Mark Twain
